| Home Schooling Program Overview | |||||
| Nacel Open Door's Home Schooling Program is an exciting program for summer students and their American host families. It offers a chance for students to learn English with a member of their host family on a structured one-on-one basis. It also provides a context for commumication, language activities, and cultural sharing which will foster continued understanding and closeness. Program Format: This is a four-week summer program wherein the first two weeks a member of the family will tutor the student for a total of fifteen hours. The tutoring is geared towards improvement of conversational English, with an emphasis on the American lifestyle and culture. Writing, reading, and listening activities should be included to round out the student's learning. Daily journal writing is encouraged as well as taping conversations during the course of the program. Students: The students who apply for this program are generally 14-16 years old. Many of the students who choose this program are traveling to the United States for the first time. They may also have difficulties in English and would like this unique opportunity to improve their skills. Most importantly, they are interested in making specific progress in their English skills, but want a family homestay experience as well. Home Tutors: The home tutor should be a member of the family who is either a teacher, has a degree in higher education, or is a member of the Home School Association and has had experience in home schooling. Tutors could be from the ranks of Literacy Volunteers or have taught in some former fashion in the past. He or she should be available to work with the student for fifteen hours during the first two weeks. Tutoring time is "set apart" from daily activities and focused on the student's advancement in English. Nacel Open Door provides each home tutor with materials, including a workbook and Home Schooling Packet. This packet will not only present general guidelines of the program but also gives examples of how to help format tutoring lessons. Nacel Open Door Support: Nacel Open Door's coordinators select the host families and are available to answer questions and handle any student/host family concerns during the program. Most Nacel Open Door participants come with a group that is escorted by a chaperone, who is also ready to help with any questions or concerns. Compensation: The Host Tutor is compensated for the tutoring. For more questions please call toll free 1-800-493-1972, or E-mail Loony2u@aol.com |
